Windows and doors – modern security features

It’s one of the most basic things we require of our home right? To make us feel secure, provide shelter, comfort and warmth.

Getting the basics right with a modern secure set of windows and doors probably gives much more reassurance than fretting or obsessing about multiple security measures.

At the end of the day, an intruder needs access…. so, access prevention is the name of the game. According to crime statistics one in three break-ins across England and Wales are made through unsecured windows and doors.

Modern windows and doors are packed with multiple features to help make a home safe and secure.

Let’s take a look at some of the features available:

Internal beading: Window beading is the strip used to secure the glass into the frame. In older windows, the beading may be external. While fundamentally safe, the beading and glazing could be silently removed by an intruder. Modern windows have the beading fitted from the inside meaning that external tampering is far more challenging.

Multi-point door locks: One of the highest locking specifications. With the appearance of a traditional key operated lock, a multi-point lock activates bolts inside the door or window to numerous points throughout the frame significantly reducing the vulnerability of a door or window to attack.

Attack resistant materials: Modern window materials such as PVC-U are pretty tough, especially with reinforcements added to the internal sections of the frame. Glass can be specified with high security options such as toughened laminates and the metals used in door hardware, particularly locking systems will be heavy duty and hardened materials, both to provide durable service and protection.

Smart security systems: Sensors embedded in door and window frames can send alerts to an app indicating whether doors or windows have been left unsecured, as well as sending an alert if tampering is detected.

Security and protection from intrusion are validated by stringent accreditations so look out for these specifications when selecting new windows and doors.

PAS 24: This is simple reassurance that the product has passed independent testing for security standards. It isn’t just the product that is tested, as independent inspectors will also visit the manufacturer to ensure that standards meet or exceed requirements.

Secured by Design: This shows that products have achieved Police Preferred Specification. It’s an official seal or approvement from law enforcement authorities, aiming to prevent crime by improving the physical security of buildings.

Typically, it a case that the sum of all the parts equals the whole – so putting all these features together is the key to maximising security at home.
